Associate Professor Jo Law

Associate Professor Jo Law currently serves as the Head of the School of the Arts, English, and Media within the Faculty of Arts, and Social Science. In this role, they actively contribute to the learning and teaching initiatives of the Bachelor of Creative Arts and the Bachelor of Communication and Media programs. Their pedagogical approach is informed by their extensive professional background as an artist, filmmaker, and media designer.

Their curriculum design places a strong emphasis on exploring various mediums and technologies, fostering challenge-based inquiry methods that are both relevant and accessible to all students. They teach a diverse array of subjects, including experimental film and video, creative coding, interactive electronic art, and animation, as well as art history, theory, and criticism.

In addition to their teaching responsibilities, Associate Professor Law is deeply engaged in academic research. They have completed a research master’s degree that delves into Hong Kong cultural politics through film media. Furthermore, their doctoral thesis explores the concept of art as the technical organization of experience, extending the philosophy of Walter Benjamin. Their research endeavours focus on understanding how the textual imprints of media and materials in artworks shape human experience.

Currently, their research projects are centred around the collaboration between scientific and creative disciplines. These projects aim to examine how art and technologies influence the ways in which humanity comprehends the world, shaping the future through the intersection of scientific inquiry and creative expression.
